Guide: multi-language website

This guide will teach you how to create another language version of your website.

Process Time: 5 min.
Difficulty: Easy.

Multi language landing pages.

Setting up languages 🌎

Step 1/4: Set your website language

Tell Unicorn Platform what language your main website uses.
Navigate to website Settings - SEO tab and set the language:

Step 2/4: Re-make your website in another language

Clone your website or create a new one. Populate it with content on another language. Publish it.

Step 3/4: Set the remake's language

Set the cloned website's language in the SEO settings, just like you did for your main site.

Now you only need to link up the language versions.

Go back to your main website's SEO settings and add the new website as a language version:

Once you select a site as a language version, the "Add a language version" button on that site will become unavailable.

That is all! Your websites are now linked.
Unicorn Platform will put meta tags to inform Google about your setup. Google will start giving search results depending on your audience geo.

Perhaps you also want to add a language selector widget? We have it πŸ‘‡

Add the languages selector widget πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

[optional]

The language widget will allow your visitors to select a preferred language.

You can add it via Settings - Widgets:

After changing a website's language settings, please re-activate the widget to apply the changes.

Link pages with META tags πŸ”—

[optional]
[advanced]

There is a more precise way to tell Google about your languages set up. You can cross-link specific pages.

To link a page to its other language version, add this meta tag to the page's head section:

<link rel="alternate" href="https://de.example.com/pricing" hreflang="de" />

For example, I want to state de.unicornplatform.com/pricing as a German version or unicornplatform.com/price.

To do this:
Locate the page you want to edit in the left sidebar
Click the three dots next to the page name and select Settings
In the Page settings window, scroll to the Custom <head> code field and paste the code there.

The language widget is smart enough to look for the <link> tags you set.
A URL to another language website in the widget will be replaced to a URL to a particular page in another language. Automatically.
